Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

 There are different kinds of social group that are represented through the media. Representation means how things are portrayed by a certain group or thing. However the main 7 that are usually represented are;

Gender

Age

Sexuality

Reginonal Identity

Ability/Disability

Class and status

Ethnicity

In our thriller opening (Exodus) the main social group that was presented were Gender and Age. Some films represent social groups in a positive or negative. Within our thriller film we decided to not follow the stereotype. Girls normally are the victims in films particularly in thrillers and horrors but in our film we challenged this by including male victims to. However when it came to the antagonist we embraced the stereotype by casting the antagonist as a male. In addition, Thriller films tend to lean on the social group; Gender. The association of gender is based upon a patriarchal view where the male is dominating portraying women as weak and commonly the victims. On the other hand in our opening we tried a different approach, showing that regardless of the antagonist’s gender, he too also targets males, therefore due to the changing ideas and views on social groups we used this idea of “anyone can be a victim” to relate to the  audience.

Q6. Technologies- Evidence

Here is a collage, I have put together showing some of the equipment we used during the construction of our film opening.  In these images you can see various forms of technology that was essential in order for us to produce a good quality film.

Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

Here are links to previous research I conducting, regarding target audience/ film during our planning and research period;

Knowing and setting a target audience is crucial because when you are aware of whom you are targeting, you begin to plan and produce things that would appeal to that particular group.  Therefore it is essential to do research on the audience who wish to target.   Firstly I carried out some research to find out which sub-genre was popular, once I gained a result I looked into which group of audience preferred thriller films and why.  Through conducting this research i have learnt that by researching who your target audience is, it can determine whether your film turns out to be a success.  By following the conventions psychological thrillers and including the appropriate content and incorporating the interests of people in the target audience, it can all combine and make the film a success.

Here is a facebook profile, that portrays our target audience, by using social network,

Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Representation:

A representation is a constructed media text. Representations can take many forms, including: radio segments, newspaper articles, photographs, films, television programs, television news segments.
There are 7 key areas of representation that are mainly used in the industry:
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Sexuality
  • Reginonal Identity
  • Ability/Disability
  • Class and status
  • Ethnicity
In all, I believe that our final product used age as a main factor. We presented teenagers as helpless. This is shown by the mise en scene. We see that all the victims are teenagers. Furthermore, our product challenges the general stereotype of women always being the victim because we also have males who are being murdered.

Q3. Media Institution

Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?

When making a film it is important to make clear who you are addressing in terms of audience.
I personally think that our use of mise en scene and our plot helps better attract our audience. Our Target audience is 18+  which is who the antagonist is after. (Young adults, teenagers.)

The overall plot is about a man who commits a series of murders. To make this more relevant to our target audience, we made all the victims teenagers. In our opening you can see that the book is full teenage victims. By using teenagers it entises other teenagers to come and see the film. It convinces other teens to watch the film. Also, we reinforced the teenage theme by having only teenage actors in the product. We made sure that the victims looked quite young to help reinforce our initial idea.

Q4. Target Audience

Knowing who your target audience are is essential because when you know who your audience are then you can produce things that would appeal to that particular group. therefore its crucial to do research on the target audience your aiming for. as i result carried out some research to find out which group of audience like thriller films the most, because this would make the film more successful

the image above shows some of the research i carried out to find out what genre the target audience prefer most

the information i found out was that the type of target audience that enjoy and watched thriller films the most was that general age was 18-24 and 50+ who enjoyed thriller films the most as well as that i established that women enjoy thriller films more than

.

  • All these statistics show the research that i found i also made sure there was two different charts to make my findings more reliable.
  • Most psychological thriller are 18+ because of the violence that may occur in the film for which under 18 years old it may be inappropriate to watch, but 18 is a more responsible age
  • however for the target audience of our thriller we decided that as a 15 year your just as responsible therefore would be able to watch it
  • So the Target Audience for EXODUS was 15+

I also found out more information on the FDA yearbook which provides audience data and bout thriller audiences and how successful thriller films so in cinemas.
